Hot Flies: Elk Hair Caddis (#12-16), La Fontaine Sparkle Pupa (#16), Purple Chubby Chernobyl (#6), Peacock PMX (#6-12), Blue or Gold Lightning Bug (#12-16), Coffee Pat's (#6), CDC Caddis Nymph (#14-16), Psycho Prince (#14-18)
Bug Scene: Stoneflies are popping
We're starting to find more and more Stonefly casings along the banks. There are a few flying around and fish are starting to look for them. The Caddis hatch has been winding down a bit, but part of that may be due to breezy conditions in the evenings. PMDs and BWOs have been hatching throughout the day and fish have been on the lookout for nymphs and emergers as they make their way to the surface.
Fishing Forecast: Nymph the mornings and Watch for the "Rubber Hatch" in the afternoons
Nymphing has been the name of the game in the mornings. Fishing 4-5 feet below an indicator with weight will get you down to the depth the fish are at quickly. A Pat's (#6) in coffee trailed by a CDC Baby Caddis Nymph (#14-18) or a Psycho Prince (#16-18) will work well. There are still a lot of insects in the system, so this array of patterns will cover the spectrum well.
You can fish a larger dry like a PMX (#6-8) in peacock or a Chubby Chernobyl (#6-8) in purple in the mornings and get a few rises. The best dry fly fishing won't happen until later in the afternoon and evening. If you want to throw larger dries, try dropping a nymph off the back of it. A TB Hare's Ear (#14-16) or a Pat's (#6-8) in coffee will help to cover the subsurface game at the same time you fish the surface.
The "Rubber Hatch" is now in full swing on the Yakima River. There are a lot of people floating the river in a vast assortment of innner tube paraphernalia. Please be aware of your surroundings, as both an angler and a floater, and be courteous to each other. Stay safe and be prepared to wait your turn at the launch if you float anytime midday.
