There is a Winter Weather Warning in effect for Ellensburg and a large part of Washington state this weekend. We hope that everyone is safe and warm during this time. The Yakima River is currently frozen along the banks with chunks of ice floating downstream. Towards the Roza Recreation Site, the ice is building up on itself and spans across the entire river! The Yakima will be unfishable until the temperatures rise again.
If you’re tough enough and live fairly close to Rocky Ford Creek, that will most likely be your only bet if you need to get your fishing fix in this weekend. The passes are already beginning to look dangerous, so take caution if you are traveling very far. Be aware that although Rocky Ford won’t freeze over, you will have to fight frozen guides and reels, making the fishing difficult.
It’s probably best to stay inside this weekend and tie flies for the upcoming spring season. Sunshine and hatches of Skwalas and March Browns are coming soon!
